Jeff Jarrett’s inclusion in the ongoing Owen Hart Foundation Cup Tournament on AEW TV attracted some negative reactions from fans on social media.
The tournament winner is set to receive a shot at the AEW World Title at the upcoming All In PPV on August 25. This is why many believed that the spot should have gone to a young star who can be viewed as a legit title challenger over the 56-year-old who losses the majority of his matches in the company.
The former WWE star provided an answer to this criticism on the latest episode of AEW Collision on June 22. Jarrett, who was a close friend of the late Owen Hart got emotional talking about the importance of the tournament to him in a very impactful promo that aired on the show:
Owen Hart passed away back in May 23, 1999, due to a rafter accident. Hart, who was set to compete on the Over The Edge PPV in May was set for a unique entrance where he would be lowered into the ring via a harness and grapple line from the rafters of Kemper Arena.
While being lowered to the ring, Hart fell from a great height and was pronounced dead shortly after. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Owen’s tragic death.
At the time of the incident, Hart was teaming up with Jarrett, with Debra acting as a manager for the two. Jeff Jarrett would leave WWE months later in October 1999 and return to WCW.
